Stuart Kelman
Since 1969, actively engaged in the field of Jewish education serving as a principal, regional youth director, camp director, professor of education, executive director of a central bureau of Jewish education, and, currently, rabbi of Congregation Netivot Shalom in Berkeley. One of the founders of CAJE, the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education. All these positions have required working with a wide range of people, denominations, institutions and educational systems within the Jewish community.

Long ago, one prayer, ma tovu, placed at the beginning of the siddur, was composed in order to respond to the question: how do I enter into a holy space to begin worship? We’ll unpack that prayer to discover just how this prayer is supposed to “work” to respond to this eternal, human need.
Writing a Sefer Torah

The art of the classical scribe is much more than simply (although crucial) artistic ability. The sofer combines learning, piety, and intention together to produce this and other works of traditional Jewish objects. In this workshop, we’ll uncover the elements that go into the writing of a Torah, mezuzah, and tefillin.

The work of this amazing group of people in every community is one of the best kept secrets of Jewish communities worldwide. Now, a new movement to reclaim the mitzvah of assisting those who have died with their transition to the next world while offering comfort and care to those who mourn, is emerging onto the national scene. The Gamliel Institute, an on-line, distance learning, certification program (a project of Kavod v’Nichum, the international organization of independent chevra kadishas) is being created to fill the void of learning and training those involved in this highest of mitzvot.
