Sarah Pessin

Sarah Pessin is Associate Professor of Philosophy and the Emil and Eva Hecht Chair in Judaic Studies at the University of Denver, where she is the incoming Director of the Center for Judaic Studies. She joined the Department of Philosophy and the Center for Judaic Studies in Fall 2004. Sarah directs the new Holocaust Project at DU which aims to re-invent Holocaust memorialization through the broadly humanist theme of "Tikkum Olam" (Repairing the World). Sarah helps organize the Forum for Religion and Society, and her research covers various topics in Jewish and Islamic philosophy, mysticism and poetry, Neoplatonisms, medieval philosophy, comparative philosophies of religion, as well as topics in health and healing and cross-cultural dialogue. She is interested in the nature of the sacred and its relation to inter-human engagement and response. She also is interested in the relationship between meditative and anxious modes of religious encounter, and existential issues related to the theme of humor.

Self, God, and the Space Between

A Jewish Philosophical Journey of Ideas, Poetry, Art, and Sound

  • Saturday 10:45PM–12:00AM Windwood
What is the essence of self? What is the reality of God? How do the answers to these two questions fit together? In our late-night exploration, we will engage readings, poetry, art, and music to help answer these questions across a range of Jewish philosophical traditions from the 1st-21st Centuries. Our journey will include photography, existential literature, spiritual poetry, ancient numerology, discourses of anxiety, and ruminations on light, and will include comparative insights from Pythagorean, Platonic, and Sufi sources. We will travel from Egypt into Western Europe, with stops in Ancient Greece along the way. We will aim to see and feel a range of Jewish philosophical insights on the nature of self and sacred.
