Kirtan Rabbi Rabbi Andrew Hahn, the "Kirtan Rabbi," received his Ph.D. in Jewish Philosophy from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2001 and rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Union College in 2003. He has also learned with Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. A teacher of martial arts for more than 30 years, Andrew integrates text study, movement and call-and-response chant into a unified practice. His offering for Limmud Colorado will be, "The Shema: Mind, Body and Voice," and will culminate in a Havdalah Kirtan. Rabbi Hahn is a resident scholar at CLAL and is actively involved with Kehilat Romemu in New York City. The Shema: Mind, Body, and Voice Session I: Text Study
Come learn about the Shema and its Kavannot by means of textual study. This is the first of three sessions dedicated to the Shema facilitated by Rabbi Andrew Hahn. See the catalogue for information on the other two. There is no need to attend all three sessions of this "track," even though they do build one upon the other.
Prayer Services - Shabbat Morning Drum/Kirtan Service
Since days of old, music has been a foundation of Jewish prayer. Psalm 150 praises God with drums, flute, violin, and cymbals. Miriam and the women danced and drummed after the Exodus from Egypt. A drum circle is a beautiful way of forming a rhythmical community and of expressing our creativity through drumming. Join Ilan Glazer, founder of DrumDaven!, and Andrew Hahn, the Kirtan Rabbi, for an inspiring, participatory musical service. No experience necessary. This service will flow into the Maven Torah Reading scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
The Shema: Mind, Body, and Voice II: Chi Gung - Fear and the Amygdala
This is the second session facilitated by Rabbi Andrew Hahn of a series concentrating on the Shema. In this session, we will embody the Shema as Jewish Mantra and learn how to use it to move from Fear to Love. Movements will be based in easy, no-impact standing meditations. You do not need to attend session I - Textual Study of the Shema - though it will be helpful. You will never say the Shema again in the same way after this session!
The Shema: Mind, Body, and Voice III: Havdalah Kirtan
This is the culmination of Rabbi Andrew Hahn's Shema "track": A rocking, Hebrew Kirtan based largely in chanting the Shema as mantra. Kirtan is a form of fully participatory chant developed in India. It is often considered to be the peak of yoga practice. It consists in simple call-and-response chant which is at once contemplative, meditative, ecstatic, and, yes, simply fun!
No knowledge of Hebrew is necessary to fully own this practice. It is customary to sit in close community on the floor, so bring a pillow and/or yoga mat with you. (Chairs will be available, too.) Also, please bring water.
Morning Chi Gung by the River
Join Rabbi Andrew Hahn early on Sunday morning for simple, low-impact start-the-day exercises. This has no Jewish content.
