Linda Loewenstein was born and raised in Chicago, in an assimilated Jewish family with two brothers and the annual Christmas tree. In 1972, Loewenstein married her husband, Mark, the child of German Holocaust refugees. Several years later, Loewenstein's youngest brother became observant, shocking and disappointing their parents. Thus began Loewenstein's journey into the heart of families coping with diverse religious observance. For twenty years, Loewenstein was a professional journalist. Loewenstein and her husband live in Boulder, where she is the director of the Boulder JCC.

Paper Plates: When Part of the Family Keeps Kosher

How Families Cope

  • Saturday 1:30PM–2:45PM Sun Burst
Loewenstein's book, "Paper Plates: When Part of Your Family Keeps Kosher," is a nonjudgmental collection of essays/interviews with people confronting the problems that occur when some family members become observant. What compromises do people make? How do Jewish parents react when told (directly or indirectly) that their form of Judaism isn't good enough? Keeping kosher is not only about food but also about identity, power struggles and values. What can families do to assure that a return to tradition on the part of some does not, ironically, destroy the family ties that create tradition?
