Rick teaches literature and language at the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA). He directs UNCA's Center for Jewish Studies as well as UNCA's Creative Writing Program and has served as writer-in-residence at the Brandeis Bardin Institute in Simi Valley, CA. He is poetry editor of Zeek: A Jewish Journal of Thought and Culture.

In this session, we'll look at work by other, less well-known poets to see where they direct their attentions in the Israeli experience and discuss what that means about how they perceive Israel.

In this session you'll have the opportunity to write a piece of poetry or prose that explores one facet of your own Jewish life. We'll use several poems by other poets to get us going and to inspire us to define, enter and explore an experience or idea having to do with Jewish life.
